Painting with Light: Bringing Influences from Classic Painting and Classic Films to Modern Storytelling

Our Story

Justin Richards is an LA-based cinematographer and colorist, with an MFA Cinematography degree from UCLA. He brings an arthouse aesthetic, influenced by classic paintings and films, to independent features and shorts, music videos, and commercial work. He recently shot the feature film, The Vortex, starring Billy Gardell and set in 1980 Las Vegas with cutting edge LED Volume technology. The Vortex had a limited theatrical release and is now available on Amazon Prime. His previous feature, Good, features Keith David in a supporting role and premiered at the Austin Film Festival and was released for streaming on Starz. He has shot a number of award winning short films including House of the Lonesome Human Beings, which won an Honorable Mention for Cinematography at the Asians on Film Festival 2017, and Tre Uomini e un Cane, which won both the audience choice award and Top jury prize at the Cici Film Festival 2017 in Sicily. An art installation project, Art in Motion, a recreation of famous paintings with real actors, lighting, and sets in slow motion premiered as a music video at the Los Angeles Film Festival accompanied by an orchestral score by Serj Tankien and had its video installation premiere at Slamdance DIG. He has shot many music videos and short films that have millions of views on Youtube, including a music video for Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway’s song Lives and the horror short film, The Bells. He is also a colorist, and has color graded numerous short films, features, and commercials, including Dekalb Elementary, a short film nominated for the Best Short Film Oscar.
